RTML
Remote Telescope Markup Language
Introduction
As an alternative to using the Phase 2 interface, the Liverpool Telescope can process observation requests using the Remote Telescope Markup Language (RTML) protocol — an XML-based language for remote-controlling telescopes or communicating with autonomous robotic telescopes. It is most powerful for integrating LT observations into automated systems, removing the need to enter each group by hand in the Phase 2 database.
The RTML method automatically creates groups in the Phase 2 database and suits the majority of observations. It has been used to integrate the LT into the GROWTH Marshal network and to develop an LT module for the TOM Toolkit.

Options for using RTML
Two ways to send observation details to the LT — both insert straight into the Phase 2 database and let you automate the process (useful for automated follow-up pipelines).
Python module

Java Create & Send tool
- One tool generates the RTML, another sends it directly to the LT
- Can be incorporated into custom scripts and programs
Rapid-response Overrides
Both interfaces can talk directly to the Target of Opportunity Control Agent (TOCA) — the system that interrupts the current observation to observe your target immediately. The LT already performs autonomous overrides for Gamma-Ray Burst alerts via the NASA GCN network, and a similar result is possible via RTML/TOCA.
